The council seemed to think it was time to make a move towards Stojanow Castle. That was the seat of power for old Phlan. We had reason to think a powerful being known as “Tyranthraxus”, a leader of the sacking of the city over 30 years ago, was still ruling over the ruins from the Castle. The plan was, we would first take the main gate. Then penetrate into the Castle looking for Tyranthraxus and whatever leadership there may be to clear them out. Starting at the gate, we would take point and then city forces would come in behind and secure the site.
Shuri observed it seemed to be on us to do the hard work and the city would reap the benefits. I had to laugh, that’s why we make the big money! I explained to her I wouldn’t have it any other way. We are more capable on point, and the city will need its resources because preserving the peace is typically long and grinding work. We’ll be done in a couple days.

So we set off…

We saw a wagon carrying supplies towards the Castle gate. I called to the teamster and made arrangements to take his load. It would be a perfect cover.

He thanked us for sparing him an unpleasant task, and warned the guard was all ill-tempered bugbears.

We dressed the part as well as we could with what was available.
Yup. Bugbears at the gate.

Fortunately they aren’t the brightest. They let our humble supply wagon through for a nominal toll.

Our first look at the full Castle showed it to be a large and imposing structure.
We set off towards one of the gates, they were at opposite sides. Equidistant from where we entered.
The perimeter street was not vacant, it was patroled by groups of Hill Giants and Fire Giants. It was an exciting journey just getting to the inner gate!

We explored some of the side buildings along the way. No doubt this is some of the toughest fighting we’ve seen yet. We also learned the password for the inner gates.

[Gamer’s note: Giants are worth a lot of experience! We gained enough for all the warriors to level up one last time. So Diomedes and Harg hit 8th level while Garaint and Shuri hit 7th. I ran back to town for those last level-ups. It will be a big help with the final act.]

Entering those gates led us to a wild shrub maze, including teleporters between segments. I feared we would get lost in here, but this is all right into Psyche’s strength. She was mapping things carefully and was able to locate us quickly everytime we took a teleport. Her clear thinking saved the day.
We finally found our way to the main keep. This was mostly empty, we may have cleared out most of the troops already? One wrong turn did lead us to a fight with a medusa. That could have been bad, but we all came through intact.
We found a staircase going way down into a natural cavern beneath the Castle. This would prove to be the end of resistance.

A large number of guards awaited at the base of the stairs. This could have been a challenging fight. But our spellcasters were extraordinary, Psyche casting Fireballs while Moya unleashed Hold Person. We cleared them off pretty quickly.
A Bronze Dragon was not an expected sort of foe! But apparently Tyranthraxus is actually an evil spirit of sorts, and had possessed the dragon.

With all of us concentrating on the dragon it fell pretty quickly. That seemed to be the end of it. The pool of glowing water in the cavern faded out, stopped glowing. We felt the evil disapate. Apparently the threat was over.

New Phlan troops were filling into the Castle area behind us. We had spearheaded the victory.

That’s the end of Pool of Radiance. The game does actually allow for continuing gameplay if you haven’t cleared everything. And if you are importing characters over to Curse of the Azure Bonds it would make sense to maximize your characters before doing so. As I suggested earlier, I will recreate my party rather than import. Mainly so Diomedes can start as a Paladin, and they will all start on equal footing.

I expect to have a couple more posts up quickly now. An overview of Curse of the Azure Bonds first, then a first update for the team not too long after.

That went quickly! I remembered Pool of Radiance taking longer than that… buts its been a long time, and I was much, much younger.

Curse always seemed like a bit of an odd duck in the series, as you spend a lot of time escorting the *actual* protagonist. Made it feel a little odd at times.

Lot’s of great renders here, and the style consistency is fantastic. The Bronze Dragon looks great… just needs that shadowy Tyranthraxus form superimposed. 😉 The group shots continue to impress. And I like your bugbears.

I’ve been playing around a bit with NanoBanana on OpenAI lately. It rendered the scene with Grim entering the Guild with dead watershapers and Naga everywhere. For me it was like SeeDream in its understanding of prompts but did better watercolor art. It also allows reference imagery. So it might be worth playing with to see how it does with your style.

I should have mentioned I had also played around with some others. The ChatGPT model is excellent, but a bit more expensive (twice what SeeDream costs). There’s also one called Omni something, that is colorful and takes multiple inputs (like SeeDream) but it seemed to do a poor job of blending things together (it looked like six different images pasted together).
obviously a lot of interesting stuff going on. I’ll have to try NanoBanana.

I definitely remember the first time I played PoR it taking a while. Of course I also remember carefully mapping square by square as I went. That led to a decade where I was pretty enthused with Gold Box and I played them all many times (until near the end, I think Dark Queen of Krynn only got a single play!). But in terms of fantasy gaming, it was my favorite (the Gold Standard!) until BG came along. I think my last run of PoR only took a weekend.
And now, I’m wanting to run this team through IWD. Maybe I’ll take a break after Curse and do that?
But yeah, Curse is an odd design. You actually gain a temporary companion for each of the tattoos, I think it’s some who was key for that part of the book. But I never read it, so it didn’t spoil much for me. Still, I always suspected they just wanted an excuse to reuse that cover art.

I have been really pleased with consistency and style of renders I’ve been getting with SeeDream. Sometimes I make more work for myself by making very complex renders (like the one with the whole team walking outside the castle). But it is fun.
The Bugbears were funny, the first set of renders seriously looked like bears in armor. Kind of funny. So I added “skinny” to the description, and got what you see.
i’m very happy with the Bronze Dragon. I had no idea how to get Tyranthraxus in there!
