I don’t have as much to write up today’s events, but we’ve made it to a first basecamp just short of the Coastway Crossing Bridge. We went out to reconnoiter the area, and came across Skie Silvershield battling some spies. She is a character, we made her acquaintance back in Baldur’s Gate before this mission even came up. She is the spoiled daughter of one of the dukes, and first impression is that she’s bored and self centered. But funny thing, when all this business with the Crusade came up, she went and joined the army under an assumed name. A cynical part of me thinks she’s doing it for attention. But then why anonymous? Is there actually a bit of character hiding beneath that vapid exterior? She conducted herself well in that little fight too. Apparently she was paying attention to her basic training. She’s an interesting part of this army.

Skie Silvershield

Then we killed a vampire. And found an old mine on the other side of our camp that was swarmed over by undead. We defeated a Lich! I guess that should be a milestone. But a dwarven cleric at the site had given us a pretty nifty anti-mage device once we realized what we were up against. Made it pretty easy to keep him down while we dumped his phylactery back in the elemental portal it was made from. And the group of Dwarves we met will join with our army.
Tomorrow we march for the Bridge.

A few thoughts at this point in the game. Psyche’s 7 Strength can be a bit of handicap! She really can’t use much gear, had to drop her boots recently because they were too heavy. That is a problem with her using a sword too, its a much heavier weapon than the sling! I’d also say the 2nd level thief is a little tricky. The Potions of Power do make her effective for finding and disarming traps, but they’re a fairly short duration potion. So you have to know there will be traps in the area to take it. Its tempting to dump Dynaheir for Safana, I know two mages won’t be very useful at the climax. But for role playing reasons I’m not going to do it, Psyche has made her feelings known…

The party balance has already shifted some, with three melee types and three support characters. Although Corwin is wicked with a bow! So far, this is a pretty tough team.

i never like going that low in STR for just that reason. Feels limiting in equipment, and I’m a pack rat. I always have a massive stash of specialized stuff to blow in the final battle because I don’t ever use consumables for fear I’ll need them later…

I also pretty much never dual class. Just always hated the implementation of that in 2e. Feels too artificial. Not really fond of 3e multi class either. 2e multi class is the sweet spot for me.

It’s always interesting to me how the party balance shifts over time. Not just across levels but also across areas thru the saga. Some areas just scream for letting a mage dominate. Some you just let your melees cut em down. Some you get more coordinated tactics. Keira made me try a lot of stealth stuff I dont usually bother with. My next IWD run will set up to push me to try some new things as well.

yeah I think that’s why most DMs I gamed with didn’t allow dual classing. Several of us who played together a lot did allow a way to add a class, and some various rules on *becoming* multi-class, but it usually meant months of training.

it’s also fair to say most DMs didn’t worry too much about encumbrance rules, beyond vague consideration that weaker characters couldn’t carry much. But of course that’s the sort of thing a computer excels at tracking. Here, Psyche is my main identifier, so much of what we find will pass through her hands. So she has the Bag of Holding. Which weighs 5 pounds regardless of load. Out of a 30 pound limit. It all means she has to very careful with juggling stuff around. You may recall, her actual PnP starting strength was 4. She ended with 13. So I chose to give her a 7 here, which seemed the floor of what was functional. But it does cause issues!

I’m thinking in BG2 I might only have two melee types for the final team. And maybe only one cleric? It will be a very different sort of team for me, I do love melee.
