I asked Minsc to help the local military train and get new recruits up to speed, he was agreeable to the chore.

Feeling the need to get some things accomplished, we set out from the Castle towards Trademeet. We arrived to see the local Guard fighting off an attack by wild animals. This had apparently become a recurring problem, some druidic order had declared hostilities towards this small city. Asking around, we also found a group of Djinn were in town hunting a wayward Rakshasa. Sounds like our work is cut out for us!

Just before heading towards the Druid Grove the next morning an old friend stopped by. It was great to see Skie looking healthy and not dead! I asked her join with us, we were a body down and she was at least a professionally trained archer.
There were plenty of trolls in the area. I had no idea if they related to Trademeet’s other problems, but trolls will fight all comers just because they like the bloodshed.
We came across the Rakshasa fast enough. There were three of them. They are powerful spell casters, but we were up to the challenge.
Shadow Druids. We’ve faced these lunatics before. If they’re not evil its only because they are insane. There is never a peaceful solution with such sorts.

We encountered the leader of this coven. By druidic rights, Jaheira should have some “legitimate” claim in challenging her to a fight for leadership. But she would only fight me?! The challenge is a no weapons or equipment sort of thing.

I’m sure she thought she’d have an advantage by changing into a werewolf? Has she not faced a cleric before? This was not a difficult challenge.

It was good to be celebrated as heroes for an afternoon. Then we stopped back by our Castle before heading back to Athkatla. We thought it would be good to explore around town before doing some Vampire hunting for the Thieves’ Guild. Funny that the thieves have been the most agreeable allies we’ve found in town, at least among the local power structures.

Gabby and Bull continue to lead from the front. This team will be strong at melee.
Jaheira backs up the leaders. She is potent with Scimitar and druidic magic.
Aerie is a versatile spellcaster, proficient in both arcane and divine magic. She is brave and a strong ally, in spite of a gentle and mild disposition.
We have the princesses bringing up the rear. Hah! I tease them about that, they aren’t. But they are both wealthy noble women. Skie is quickly becoming a very good archer. Nalia is a useful scout and spellcaster.

We went out to Tangled Oak Island, just exploring around. We found their famous Oak was quite sick. Spent some time poking around and found the problem involved some undeath getting to the sap of the tree. Well that’s a different sort of thing!

We needed to get into the final rest of an ancient dead dragon. This involved a lot of searching a cave that frustrated poor Nalia! Especially since it proved to be magically hidden and we were missing a step for quite some time.

From there we explored the Graveyard, looking for a group of vampires.

Oh we found them! We got Bull a new axe that excells at destroying undead. Wow is he a wrecking machine!
I was on point and completely shielded from their draining attacks. It is sort of fun tearing up such a dark evil. Funny. On principle I’m opposed to killing, so killing undead is perversely satisfying.

We cleared out the whole lot of them. The leader of the crew claimed to be the sister of our foe Irenicus. Of course she also suggested the *thieves* were not completely honest with us. I trembled with fear that she might suggest the sun rises in the East or Beef is a red meat. I could have sworn I’d read a bestiary that suggested vampires were “highly intelligent”. For my own journal I’ll be recording her pronouncements as “The wisdom of Bodhi the Mediocre”.

And with that, we’re about ready to head out after Imoen.

Gabby and crew will be setting off to find Imoen next!

A few quick notes. As before, I consider Skie was never a thief. Her training was entirely as a rookie soldier with the Flaming Fist. So she starts specialized in Short Bow and Long Sword, then builds bow as first priority. She is now just a few thousand experience from Grand Mastery in short bow.

Bull has a couple of effective axes now. He normally uses the Frostreaver, an excellent +3 battle axe that also does cold and acid damage. He also has the throwing axe Azuredge (I’m not sure why an axe with “blue” in its name is depicted as red?) which excells against undead. Combine that with Grand Mastery in axe and a 19 strength, and yeah, look out for Bull!

I will leave Nalia as Castle steward when we leave for Spellhold. Seems fitting. I sort of want to keep Skie on this team (just call them “Bull’s Angels!”), but what I would most often do is replace her with Keldorn. We’ll see…
